Story
The sun had set, and the city was covered in darkness. At this point, Noelle had decided that a midnight stroll might be in order. She needed a breather after the terrible day, but this walk would not be very peaceful. "For god's sake, why do they have to be so loud, you're building a house not blowing up a mountain" Noelle groaned as she looked at the construction site in the distance. As she questioned this, she heard the sickly sweet voice that still haunted her dreams. The voice belonged to Richard, her ex. The same ex that had killed her family, before threatening to release the footage he had secretly recorded during their time together. The night was still fresh in Noelle's mind despite the years passing since. "Ah great! I'm glad to hear that we are finally laying the foundations! This is gonna be the nicest house in the neighbourhood!" Richards's voice floated throughout the street. His status as a pillar of the community was paying off. Noelle speeds up in an attempt to rush past unseen. Their eyes lock as she checks to see if he has seen her.
"Alright everyone, Time to go home for the night!" he calls out, sending the construction company home. "I will finish up here tonight." Before he could finish his sentence, the company staff had already started packing up, leaving the site nearly empty within minutes. Noelle turned to try and sneak away, hidden within the group of construction staff, but it was too late. A hand covers her mouth as she feels her body pulled backwards, as Richard pulls her into his embrace. "I don't think you are going anywhere hun, we need to have a little chat." Noelle's spine tingled with a mix of fear and morbid curiosity. What was this discussion about, could she turn the tables between them and would it end up being enough to stop him once and for all?
Her mind ran wild with different plans and ideas as she pondered this. This would only last so long as she would snap back to the present moment when he spoke again. "You know, for someone who gets into so many near-death experiences. I expected you to be harder to catch." She could see his sweet smile as it dawned on her. Her hands had been cuffed, her daydream posing as the perfect chance to capture her in such a way. "Let's go sit by the hole where the foundations will be hun, throw away any negative feelings and seal them away forever." She never got a choice in the matter, led over to a bench near the pit by Richard. "I haven't forgotten what you did, dick. You may act like this symbol of perfection but doesn't it eat you up inside knowing what you are?" Noelle asked, not expecting an answer.
"I do regret leaving a loose end or two, you are correct." Richard would answer, as he turned to look at her small form. "But I like to think that after our discussions today, we will both feel a lot better." Something about this felt wrong, he had never shown any interest in being polite to her before, especially not when it was just the two of them. "I would like to sincerely and thoroughly apologise for what I did. I know that saying sorry won't bring them back but I do truly feel awful about what I did back then. I do not have any interest in justifying my actions either." What unsettled Noelle wasn't what he was saying, it was the soft-spoken voice he said it in. It felt like he was trying to comfort a child. She wondered if that was how he truly saw her. "You know hun, everything I have done since has been in your honour." Questionable at best and a flat-out lie at worst, this falsehood hung in the air for what felt like an eternity, before he spoke once more to break the silence his own words had caused.
"We don't see eye to eye. That's very clear to me. But after today I am more than sure we will get along perfectly fine." Another pause, he had always been particularly fond of them. One would have to wonder whether he would have gone into acting or drama had he not ended up volunteering for a charity. "A perfect duo even! With you playing the role of the floor and myself playing the role of the man who walks on the floor so much that one would be a fool to pay any mind to it." With the sudden tone shift in his voice, he would push Noelle down into the pit. Her cuffed hands would make sure that struggle was her only option, as any attempt to hold on or keep a balance at this moment would prove a nigh impossibility. Her body came to a stop as he loomed over, carefully climbing a ladder down into the pit himself. "What a pickle. You have no way out. Its such a shame to see you like this, after all, you would always remind me that outliving me was the only goal you had."
